When we eat, especially in more copious intakes, a large amount of blood goes to your digestive system to do the digestion correctly and absorb the necessary nutrients. Therefore, there is less blood left in our brain, which causes, almost always, that we want to take a nap, or, in many cases, that there are brief episodes of dizziness. This sensation can appear to a greater or lesser extent, depending on how we eat and what we eat.

What do we mean? In terms of the type of food that is ingested, if in our meals we include products with a large amount of sugar and fats, the digestion process will be longer and more difficult, so the amount of blood used for it will be greater, so if we have the habit of taking these foods, we will be more likely to suffer dizziness after the intakes.

As we've said before, quantity also matters. If you take more food, your digestive system will also need more blood to digest. And speed is also important. Those people who tend to eat faster chew food less, so they are not properly performing the first step of the digestion process, which is chewing. Therefore, the rest of the organs will have to face digesting poorly digested food and will have to cover that deficit with their work, which implies a heavier digestion and, therefore, more blood in the area.

Those people who are diabetic, will have to be especially careful if they report dizziness after meals, since it may not be due to digestion, but due to poor regulation of the hormone insulin, so they will need to adjust the dose. If this is your case, do not hesitate to go to the specialist.

How to treat dizziness after eating

If you have finished eating (sometimes, due to special circumstances such as a celebration or an event we cannot avoid making copious meals) and you feel that you are getting dizzy and that you may lose consciousness, the first thing you have to do is stop doing what you are doing at that moment to lie down. It does not matter if it is on the floor or on another surface such as a sofa or a bed, what is essential is that you keep your feet raised above your head.

How to Prevent Dizziness After Eating

If lately you tend to suffer from dizziness when you finish eating, you may have to make changes in your eating routine:

  • Decrease the amount of fats: if you usually consume products very rich in fat and sugars, try to reduce them throughout your day, replacing them with other types of foods, such as vegetables or fruits. Your digestions will be lighter and you will receive a greater amount of nutrients.
