Spider phobia is extremely common and, therefore, many of us believe that the bite of any arachnid is deadly, when it is not. Most “spider bites” are confused with that of other insects such as ticks and even skin infections.

What are the symptoms of spider bite

It is important to know that only a few spiders have fangs large enough to bite and inject the venom into humans, however, it is of the utmost importance to know how to recognize the arachnid and, of course, take into account what the symptoms of a spider bite are. In this article, we tell you what you need to know in these cases.

Symptoms of common spider bites

As we mentioned before, in many cases it is confused with the bite of some other animal such as a tick, the bite of a bee, allergic reactions caused by a plant with poison ivy and even important atopic conditions.

The bite of a common spider is quite recognizable by signs such as:

  • Red, swollen skin around the bite.
  • Tingling.
  • Feeling that the area is anesthetized.
  • Itch.
  • Ardour.

Common spider bites are practically harmless and, in most cases, go unnoticed, however, there is another class of spiders that are really poisonous, whose bite can generate serious clinical symptoms.

Symptoms of Black Widow Spider Bite

Symptoms begin to occur about 30 minutes with a sharp and intense pain in the area of the bite, which can radiate to the chest, back and abdomen. However, it is mostly presented around the bite.

After this first symptom, sweating begins, which tends to be excessive, very similar to when exercising and, in some cases, the presence of colic or abdominal stiffness begins, which are so intense that they can be confused with appendicitis or any other stomach condition.

Symptoms of the bite of the stray spider

These spiders are commonly found in the United States and Europe and since they cannot climb, they move on the floor of basements and main plants. The bite of this type of spider is poisonous and although it is not fatal to people, it must be treated medically quickly. Usually, the symptoms appear after 24 or 36 hours of the attack and a blister usually appears, which will later open and a kind of ulcer will begin to form. It can cause significant damage to skin tissues, irritation and skin lesions that take a long time to heal.

In addition to this, other symptoms may include the following:

  • Nausea.
  • Fatigue and tiredness.
  • Memory loss.
  • Weakness.

What to do in case of spider bite?

The first thing that is recommended before handling the bite, is to try to recognize the type of spider. Next, the situation of the bite, its coloration and the levels of swelling should be evaluated. Depending on this, you can take certain measures such as:

  1. Avoid the extraction of the poison as much as possible, do not suck or squeeze the wound.
  2. Proceed to clean the entire affected area with soap and water. Try to make it a neutral soap, free of alcohol and fragrances.
  3. Apply ice covered with a cloth or cold compresses to help deflate the area and numb a little in case of pain.
  4. Raise the arm or leg, in case this has been the affected area, to avoid complications with the wound.

When you've already carried out first aid to relieve the spider bite, it's a matter of paying attention to any other warning symptoms. If you have any symptoms described below, it is of the utmost importance to go to the emergency room immediately:

  • Fainting.
  • Stomach pains or spasms.
  • Swelling in the eyes, lips, or throat.
  • Breathing difficulties.
  • Rash.
