The egg is known to be a food highly rich in protein and vitamins. Within this are two distinct parts already known:

  • Clear: it is mainly composed of water and is used in confectionery for its ability to grow by introducing air.
  • Yolk: it is the part of the egg commonly known to be yellow and this has most of the proteins and lipids.

Although it is a very easy food to digest and contains multiple vitamins essential for the functioning of the body, for many years it has been debated whether its consumption is harmful to health due to the calories it contains and, especially in the case of fatty liver, if it is better to stop consuming it or do it normally.

One of the foods that are most prohibited to people who suffer from fatty liver are saturated fats and any food that generates a high caloric intake, which can cause high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. This occurs in all animal foods, say milk and its derivatives or, in this case, the egg.

One serving (1 egg) contains about 200 kcal and about 500 mg of cholesterol which in the first instance would tell us that we should avoid it completely. However, if we analyze more thoroughly, 70% of these calories and fats come from the yolk; because it is the part of the egg that contains the most protein, it is the one that provides the most cholesterol to the body.

Is the egg bad for fatty liver? Yes and no. Like everything, it should be consumed in a moderate way. In the same way it is better to opt for the white, since it contains healthy proteins for the body but without the calories provided by the yolk. If you are not very fond of the white, it is best to reduce your consumption to one or two per week, at most.
